久々に金融関係の作品を観ました。
ウィザード・オブ・ライズ（原題 The Wizard of Lies）
今の支店に転勤してきてからマドフの救済基金の件で毎回ちょっとしたクレームを入れてこられる方が居て、最初はある意味販売していた証券会社も被害者でしょ、と正直思ってしまっていましたが、クレーム対応しながら調べてたら映画をマドフ関連の映画を見つけたので観てみました。
2008年の金融危機を機に発覚した史上最大規模の詐欺事件。
650億ドルという史上最大の金融詐欺事件。
金額も衝撃的ですが、その犯人が金融業界では誰もが知るバーナード・L・マドフでした。
ナスダックの元会長であり、当時の金融業界で絶大な信頼を得て富裕層を中心に神のごとく尊敬されていた人物のようでした。
詐欺の内容は至ってシンプルで、ポンジ・スキームと呼ばれる所謂自転車操業のような古典的なものでした。
しかしそれをマドフのネームバリュー、時には出資者をあえて断ったりとそのブランド力を上げていきます。
2008年の金融危機で投資家からの払い戻しに耐えれなくなり、マドフは家族に打ち明けるところから映画は始まります。
映画としては詐欺の手法や家庭ではなく、詐欺が暴露されてからのマドフの家族に焦点を当てています。
この事件はマドフが単独で行ったものでありますが、世間の目はそうではありません。
自身の老後の資金を全て預けたもの、家族の医療費を回していたもの。
ただの詐欺事件ではなく、世界中の多くの人間の生活を奪ってしまいました。
そうなるともちろん世間の怒りはマドフ一人ではなく、その家族にまでいきます。
非道中傷、マスコミの対応。その追い込まれ方もリアルに描かれています。
ロバート・デニーロの演技力もさることながら、テーマ自身も重いため収支作品の空気は重いです。
マドフは犯行は単独であり、そのうち家族への非難は落ち着くだろう、とどこか楽観的というか他人事のように話していましたが、すぐに悲劇も起こります。
作中でも言っていましたが、本人は捕まったことですべてが終わったような感じでいましたが、
残された家族への影響については考えが及んでいなったんですね。
作品としては魅せ方、ロバート・デニーロの演技力等で素晴らしいものでしたが、
内容は考えさせられるものが多かったです。
自分が担当しているお客様の損害額は正直大きくはありませんが、実際の事件としてみると
人々の生活に多大なる損害を与えた事件であったことを改めて実感しました。
そろそろ米国大統領選挙ですね。
明日からのマーケットはどうなるか。
